Positive Youth Development (PYD) is a process that prepares young people to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood through a coordinated, progressive series of activities and experiences, which help them to become socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively competent.
It addresses the broader developmental needs of youth, in contrast to deficit-based models, which focus solely on youth problems (National Collaboration for Youth Members, 1998).
Team Fort Collins facilitates a PYD group comprised of youth from all of our local high schools. This group explores and takes action on specific prevention issues affecting our schools and community such as access of alcohol to underage people. Team Fort Collins, along with other adults in the community work with this group to empower the involved youth through nurturing and utilizing their leadership skills.
