City Council “Grandfathers in” Existing Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Tuesday night City Council voted 5 – 2 to grandfather in existing medical marijuana dispensaries in Fort Collins. We now have a total of 23 MMD’s in city limits and there’s no cap for more being opened. The two dissenting votes came from Lisa Poppaw and Wade Troxell. According to the Coloradoan “[Poppaw]said she didn’t want to shut down businesses, but also wanted to protect neighborhoods from the influence of marijuana shops.” Wade Troxell’s concern was with the distancing requirements (1,000 feet from schools or other marijuana businesses and 500 feet from facilities such as colleges, parks, and places of worship) that were originally set by City Council. Grandfathering in existing marijuana dispensaries negate these rules. Troxell stated “in my mind, this makes a mockery of our separation requirements and our zoning requirements.”

Captain Jerry Schiager of the Fort CollinsPolice was also present at the Tuesday meeting. He stated that both the presence and availability of high grade marijuana has increased in our local high schools and that it is linked to the presence of Medical Marijuana Businesses.

One must ask the question “is this really what the citizens of Fort Collins want for our home town?” YOUR TURN: What effect (if any) do you think the presence of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in our community is having on our young people?

this grandfather isn’t so wise

Team Fort Collins was disappointed when it was originally decided to allow medical marijuana dispensaries in Fort Collins. What we feared for our youth at that time has become a reality–a decreased perception of risk and increased marijuana use among youth. Despite our disappointment, we were encouraged by the care taken by City Council to minimize the risk associated with these businesses by identifying important provisions for their location. Council members’ attention to the issue was thoughtful and time well spent but it was all for not when they decided to make a motion to grandfather in 21 dispensaries bringing the total number of medical marijuana dispensaries in Fort Collins to 23, making 91% of the dispensaries not in compliance with the location provisions.

Fortunately, the topic is still up for discussion. Make no mistake, though, City Council is strongly inclined to keep these dispensaries in business—there is just one dissenting member. If you have an issue with medical marijuana dispensaries your voice needs to be heard. Those in favor are showing up to City Council meetings in droves. While they speak of the wonderful service they provide this community, their professionalism, and their “help” in cutting into the drug cartel’s market the truth is this is BIG business and they have a lot to lose—hundreds of thousands of dollars, monthly. None of our neighboring communities is allowing this. Why are we?

Cigarette Use Among High School Students

Well, some good news and some not so good news. Cesar Fax‘s most recent trend data shows current cigarette use continues to decrease among U.S. 12th Graders but the decrease among 8th and 10th graders seems to have stalled. But overall, look at those drops in use – very cool. For full report click here.

Mural Project at Northside Skatepark

Team Fort Collins is pleased to announce an exciting community youth project. A search is presently underway for an artist who will work with local skate boarders to design and paint a mural on the east facing wall at Northside Aztlan Skatepark. The mural project is managed by City of Fort Collins Art in Public Places (APP). APP was created in the spring of 1995 to encourage and enhance artistic expression and appreciation and to add value to the Fort Collins community through acquiring, exhibiting, and maintaining public art. The artist for the Northside Skatepark mural project must live within a 150 mile radius of Fort Collins, so that he/she/the team is available to engage and interact with the community. If you are interested in this or other APP projects you may visit the “Current Competitions” link.
