In the spring of 1989 representatives of Fort Collins United Way, Fort Collins City Council, Poudre School District, Colorado State University Institute for Health and Human Services, and the chemical dependency treatment community met to seek alternative ways to deal with drug use and alcohol abuse in the city. This nucleus of what would eventually become TEAM Fort Collins realized that involving the whole community would provide a more comprehensive approach to the problem of substance abuse.
By September 1989, TEAM Fort Collins was born, with more than 100 members representing retail stores, manufacturing, law enforcement, religious organizations, print and broadcast media, health and social service organizations, alcohol outlets, business services, Colorado State University and concerned citizens.
Youth in Fort Collins are part of the Poudre School District, which provides K-12 education for more than 24,500 students in elementary schools, junior high schools, alternative junior high school, comprehensive high schools, alternative high school, charter schools, and several early childhood centers. TEAM Fort Collins provides curricula and activities at each of these levels.
